Payments Policy

This policy explains how payments work on BuyHappyThings.com — what methods we accept, when you are charged, how refunds are processed, and how we protect your payment information.

1. Accepted Payment Methods

BuyHappyThings.com accepts the following payment methods:

  • Credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, processed securely via Stripe.
  • PayPal — including PayPal balance, linked bank accounts, and PayPal Credit where available.

We do not accept checks, money orders, wire transfers, cash, or cryptocurrency. Payments completed outside of our checkout — including any arrangement made directly with a seller — are not covered by our buyer protections. See our Off-Platform Transactions Policy for details.

2. When You Are Charged

Payment is collected immediately when you place your order. Your card or PayPal account is charged at checkout — not when the item ships. If a payment fails, your order is not placed and no charge is made. You can retry with a different payment method.

3. Order Total

Your order total consists of:

  • Item price — the price listed by the seller.
  • Shipping — calculated at checkout based on the item's weight, dimensions, and your delivery address. Shipping rates are provided by our shipping partner, Shippo.
  • Sales tax — where required by law, BuyHappyThings.com collects and remits sales tax on behalf of sellers as a marketplace facilitator. The applicable tax is shown before you confirm payment.

The full order total — including shipping and tax — is always displayed on the checkout summary page before you confirm your purchase. There are no hidden fees charged to buyers.

4. Currency

All prices on BuyHappyThings.com are listed and charged in US dollars (USD). If your card or PayPal account is in a different currency, your bank or PayPal will apply their standard conversion rate and may charge a foreign transaction fee. BuyHappyThings.com has no control over these fees.

5. Payment Security

BuyHappyThings.com does not store, transmit, or process your card number. All card payments are handled directly by Stripe, which operates at PCI DSS Level 1 — the highest level of payment card security certification. PayPal payments are handled entirely by PayPal. We store only a payment reference token used to associate your payment with your order.

6. Refunds

When a refund is approved — whether through a seller-initiated return or a resolved Case — it is issued to the original payment method used at checkout.

  • Card refunds typically appear within 5–10 business days, depending on your bank or card issuer.
  • PayPal refunds typically appear within 3–5 business days.

Original shipping charges are generally not refunded unless the seller made an error (wrong item sent, item significantly not as described, or non-delivery confirmed). See our Cases Policy for the full refund process.

7. Chargebacks

A chargeback occurs when you dispute a charge directly with your bank or card issuer rather than resolving it through BuyHappyThings.com. We encourage you to open a Case with us first — chargebacks can take significantly longer to resolve and may not result in a refund if the seller can provide proof of shipment.

If you do file a chargeback, BuyHappyThings.com will provide your bank or payment processor with relevant transaction information, including order details, tracking information, and any Case history. Accounts that file repeated chargebacks may have their buying privileges suspended.

8. Failed or Declined Payments

If your payment is declined at checkout, your order is not placed. Common reasons include:

  • Insufficient funds or credit limit reached.
  • Your bank blocked the transaction (sometimes triggered by unfamiliar merchants or international processors).
  • Incorrect card details (card number, expiration date, or CVV).
  • Your card or PayPal account has fraud protection rules that flagged the transaction.
